How do I take care of the iron?
Depending on the product, here are some basic guidlines to help maintain the beauty of your hand forged iron:
Indoor products such as towel bars, shelf brackets, hooks, fireplace tools, etc are finished with a high quality wax. The iron is forged, tumbled then re-heated to drive off any moisture and open the pores in the iron. Wax is then applied by hand to the entire piece. Over time the wax will start to gradually wear depending on the item. We recommend an occasional cleaning with SC Johnson Pledge which has a high paraffin wax content. This will help protect the iron from moisture and maintain the natural beauty of the piece. The climate where you live will determin the frequency of applying the Pledge. In dry climates the pieces will hold there finish indefinately.
Outdoor products are coated with a clear laquer commonly available at hardware stores. If the item is continually used outdoors, we would recommend anually recoating the piece with a couple of coats of clear laquer for protection against the elements. If a rust spot does appear, remove it with some fine steel wool or emery paper and recoat with clear lacuer.
Eating utensils are heated then finished with olive oil just as you would season a cast iron frying pan. If rust appears, remove with fine steel wool and re-season.
Can I send you iron for re-finishing?
Absolutely! We stand behind our products. If you purchase iron from us we will gladly re-finish the piece at no charge. All we ask is that handle the shipping cost.
What is you Return Policy?
You may return any of our standard products within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. We’ll also pay the return shipping costs if the return is a result of our error (you received an incorrect or defective item, etc.).
Custom made items will be left to our discreation. For obvious reasons personalized items such as branding irons are not returnable.
Keep in mind that we are very, very customer service oriented and will go the extra mile to satisfy our customers, so please don’t hesitate to ask us anything regarding reurns, refinishing or modifications to any of our work. Remember in most cases our items will last indefinately.
If you do require a refund you should expect to receive your refund within a couple of days of our receiving the return items.
If you need to return an item, simply login to your account, view the order using the “Complete Orders” link under the My Account menu and click the Return Item(s) button. We’ll notify you via e-mail of your refund once we’ve received and processed the returned item.
We can ship to virtually any address in the world. Please note that there may be some rare restrictions on some products, and some products may be cost prohibitive to ship to international destinations.
When you place an order, we will estimate shipping and delivery dates for you based on the availability of your items and the shipping options you choose. Depending on the shipping provider you choose, shipping date estimates may appear on the shipping quotes page.
Please also note that for many of the smaller items like hooks, knobs and drawer pulls we will recommend the shipping method on the product page. This will allow you to take advantage of certain flat rate options offered by the USPS. The shipping rates for many items we sell are weight-based. The weight of any such item can be found on its detail page.
How are the items made?
Each piece is an original, created one hammer blow at a time! All of our iron work is hand forged using the same techniques that date back centuries. Our small items are made with the same skill, methods and attention to detail as our larger pieces. We make all of our own tooling and commonly make new tooling to do custon work. Because of this, it is impossible for us to make two identical peices. Items like the hooks, knobs and pulls are nearly identicle, but nothing is cast or mass produced. This is what gives hand forged iron it’s charm and uniqueness.
What is the lead time for out of stock items?
This is the most difficult question to answer. We dilligently try to track our inventory in our retail store in Washington with the online store. Once an online order is placed, we check status of items in the shop followed by the availability of the items in the retail store. Depending on the items and quantity, we can usually fill orders quite quickly. Keep in mind though there is also the very real human element. We can only swing the hammer for so long on any given day. We don’t cut corners in our forging and there is the occasional personal obligations that may arise. We will post expeced lead times on standard product, and custom work will be quoted on a case by case basis.
